Tony Dungy's Diet of Worms circa 2014

Tony Dungy is facing his own Diet of Worms (nothing to do with high protein eating).

Read the link below to learn about Martin Luther and the 1521 Diet of Worms - the event where he was being called to recant his views and writings regarding justification, the Church, faith, Christ as Savior, etc
http://www.luther.de/en/worms.html

Luther was facing the civil and religious/spiritual authorities of his day - the Church of Rome and the Imperial powers of his world. Remember that in 1521 there was a very close connection between the Church and the Civil powers.

The pressures to recant his views, and thus remain in favor with his church, were tremendous. At that time the church of Rome was the only game in town. In the face of all the pressure Luther defended his views and then took the night to reflect. The next morning he gave the famous words...

"Unless I am convinced by Scripture and plain reason - I do not accept the authority of the popes and councils, for they have contradicted each other - my conscience is captive to the Word of God. I cannot and I will not recant anything for to go against conscience is neither right nor safe. God help me. Amen."

Fast forward to 2014 and Tony Dungy and the Michael Sams media obsession. Dungy is known as a man of faith, and his faith is at odds with the 21st century secular church - the media, progressives, the LGBT agenda. They play the role of the Imperial Diet of 1521 and Dungy is their Martin Luther. The social pressure of the secular church is being brought to bear on Tony Dungy because he is viewed as being a part of the 'subculture of the religious right' in the NFL...

It is feared (yet, i believe hoped for) by the secular church crowd that Dungy holds to the 'outdated' religious views about traditional marriage (views that Pres Obama held not too long ago and that Pres Clinton - with huge Democratic party support signed into law back in 1996- DOMA http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Defense_of_Marriage_Act).

Dungy said nothing about Sams and his sexual preferences yet that is the issue that the media wants to go back to. The fact that the media has gone wild over the story of a 7th round draft pick proves Dungy's point about the distraction factor (can anyone name another 7th round pick??).
My guess is that media types will be lurking around the Rams training camp to try to get some sort of quote from a Rams player that they can construe as 'homophobic'. Some reporter will try to make a name for himself by 'outing' those who believe in traditional views of marriage, or those who don't give full acceptance to the LGBT agenda for the NFL.

Back to Dungy... I think he's been on vacation, but when he gets back as an analyst it will be interesting to see if the pressure continues. The pressure isn't to simply explain his reasons for 'why he wouldn't have drafted Sams'; the media really wants to know "Is Tony Dungy a homophobe*?" If they determine that he is, then will he recant? Will he bow the knee to the 21st century Secular Diet of Worms?
Whatever his real views are, I hope that Tony Dungy resists the current media cultural blitzkrieg. It would be so refreshing to see a man of conviction- a man like Martin Luther; it would be so unlike those whose religious convictions evolve with the cultural / political wind. If Dungy needs the words for a press release or interview he would do well to read the Luther quote above - it fits quite well.

*homophobe is the secular church term for anyone who dares to hold to the views held by most of civilization for the past 6000 years - marriage is between a man and a woman (women is some cultures, but polygamy was never condoned or seen in positive light in the Bible). As an aside, if 'marriage' is redefined, then where does the new definition begin or end - why not polygamy, incest, pedophilia?  I'm not condoning those, just raising the question.
