Selective hyprocrisy

So Obamacare print ads show young ladies and extol how great it is that they can engage in liquor shots and lots of sex because now they "are covered" - they have Obamacare. The message is "engage in all sorts of irresponsible behavior because your Obamacare will save you from the consequences."

The ads they don't show, but could:
-the girl smoking without guilt because "she covered" now; no need to worry about cancer medical bills.
-the girl slurping down a 32oz soft drink - no concern about obesity or diabetes because now she is "covered"

The coercive utopians/ collectivists are selective hypocrites when it comes to which "risky" behaviors you can or should engage in. Smoking and soft drinks are bad for your health and are expensive in terms of health care, but risky sexual behavior isn't risky because now you can get birth control, STD coverage, and abortion coverage.

If smoking and obesity are taboo because they create such huge health costs, then why not having children out of wedlock - talk about huge costs: health and welfare. The rate of poverty has increased in part because there are so many children born out of wedlock and the single parent (usually mom) ends up out of work and in poverty.

Cancer from smoking and obesity from over-eating are avoidable - avoid certain behaviors, which are frowned upon by society
Having children out of wedlock is avoidable - avoid certain behaviors which are enabled and rewarded by society.
WHAT'S WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE?

I recently heard a sermon ( I forget the speaker- either Keller, Allen, or Tullian T.) and there was a quote from Martin Luther about "thanking satan for pointing out my sin because it reminds me of the gospel - Jesus died for sinners".

this blog below has some similar quotes.
http://kerdos.wordpress.com/2011/05/26/preaching-the-gospel-to-satan/

Therefore, Satan, you will not prevail against me as you try to frighten me by showing me the magnitude of my sins and to plunge me into anguish, loss of faith, despair, hatred, contempt of God, and blasphemy.  In fact, when you say that I am a sinner, you provide me with armor and weapons against yourself, so that I may slit your throat with your own sword and trample you underfoot. You yourself are preaching the glory of God to me; for you are reminding me, a miserable and condemned sinner, of the fatherly love of God, who ‘so loved the world that He gave His only Son, etc.’ (John 3:16). You are reminding me of the blessing of Christ my Redeemer. On His shoulders, not mine, lie all my sins. For ‘the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all,’ and ‘for the transgressions of His people He was stricken’ (Is 53:6, 8). Therefore when you say that I am a sinner, you do not frighten me; but you bring me immense consolation.”
Martin Luther, Works, vol 26, p36-37.

That truth of Luther's is SO IMPORTANT for our lives. when we really believe the gospel then we can admit our sin. I know the doctrine of this, but not the practice in my life. I'm so prone to being defensive or trying to justify my foolish sinful anger or petulance.I tend to live by the motto "I don't mind you calling me a sinner as long as you don't treat me like one." It's OK to admit in some real way that I'm a sinner, but don't actually point out real sin, embarrassing sin. Let's keep it all theoretical.
But as Luther said somewhere, "We have a real Savior for real sinners, for such we are".
To deny & justify/rationalize my sin, or defend myself is to deny the Gospel - Jesus came to save Sinners.

Why God puts up with the stupid things we do

I don't know if this is "an insight" or just hooey, but i have a thought about "why God might allow us a believers continue to do stupid things that 'hurt His reputation'". ( I know this is a complicated issue and I'm not condoning the stupid things Christians do, but none of it catches God off guard. It's not like He didn't know how sinful and lame we are).

Could it be that He allows it so as to distinguish true believers, who love Him for who He is, from those who would use any reason to doubt Him?
Those who truly know God (and the truths of sin and grace) realize that God is bigger and greater than the weak vessels He has chosen to serve as His ambassadors.
Those who look at the "hypocrites in the church", etc and see an excuse not to trust God show that their focus is more on man than on God who has displayed his grace and love through Jesus. If the sinfulness of man trumps the grace shown through the cross then you've got your heart set on the wrong thing.
